I don't know who or how much third-party plugins are developed but i stumbled over mapnik/mapnik#2916 (i know its quite old) and thought that it might be worth to smooth the way for custom plugins.
So as mapnik has now CMake support, this will change change the typical development to cmake (at least for this hello world plugin).
