Summary

  • Add a disabled-by-default allowEncryptedV2AgentTasks capability for non-canonical openai-responses providers whose upstream has been explicitly verified to consume or relay opaque V2 child-task ciphertext.
  • Apply eligibility consistently to direct routing, combo selection, sub-agent fallback, and recovery dispatch. Canonical ChatGPT forwarding remains implicitly eligible, while every other ineligible route stays fail-closed.
  • Expose the opt-in in both Add Custom Provider and Provider Settings with an explicit confirmation, validate it at config and management boundaries, and document the trust model in the English reference while keeping the UI copy localized.

Related to #92. Complements #1540, #1556, and #1794; this capability does not replace plaintext task recovery.

Behavior

  • Canonical ChatGPT forwarding remains implicitly eligible without a provider flag.
  • A non-canonical Responses provider remains blocked with unreadable_encrypted_agent_task unless the opt-in is enabled.
  • An opted-in Responses provider receives the original opaque task unchanged, and plaintext recovery is skipped for that dispatch.
  • Eligibility is evaluated after model-specific wire resolution, so a modelAdapters override to openai-chat remains blocked even when the provider is opted in.
  • Non-Responses adapters cannot enable the capability.
  • Changing the adapter away from openai-responses clears the create-form opt-in so stale state cannot be submitted.

Security

  • The capability is disabled by default and requires an explicit confirmation in the GUI.
  • Eligibility is never inferred from a provider name, model name, or custom base URL.
  • The flag authorizes passthrough only; OpenCodex does not decrypt, translate, or recover the payload, or claim that an unverified upstream is compatible.
  • Management and startup validation reject invalid combinations, and provider DTOs continue to omit credentials.

Verification

Final validation was run on 03b3e479 rebased onto dev@749ab225:

  • Exact backend regression cases for this change — 11 passed, 0 failed across five test files.
  • Full GUI suite — 955 passed, 0 failed across 167 files (8,532 assertions).
  • bun run typecheck
  • cd gui && bun run lint
  • cd gui && bun run lint:i18n
  • cd gui && bun run build
  • cd docs-site && bun run build — 393 pages built.
  • bun run privacy:scan
  • Doctor service memory contract typecheck.
  • Release-script production build.
  • Changed-scope React Doctor — 18 files scanned, no findings.
  • git diff --check origin/dev...HEAD
  • Pre-push privacy review of the complete PR diff and both committed screenshots found no test endpoint, machine-local path, credential, private key, or local provider configuration.

A broader PR-focused backend run immediately before the final upstream docs/privacy-only advance passed 147 tests, skipped two macOS-only tests, and failed none. Compatibility checks against the v2.26.0 tag also passed focused tests, typecheck, GUI production build, and package build. Manual end-to-end verification confirmed that a non-canonical Responses provider can complete a V2 spawned child task after the explicit opt-in is enabled.

Full-suite context

All change-relevant local CI gates are green. The repository-wide backend suite is not clean on this Windows/Bun 1.3.14 host for failures that were independently reproduced from a detached worktree checked out to clean origin/dev without this PR. The stable baseline failures were Windows identity/ACL and process-timing cases, hard test timeouts, and one Bun panic; no reproduced failure was in a path changed by this PR. This PR therefore reports the complete baseline context while using the green PR-focused backend suite and final exact regressions as its local readiness signal. GitHub CI remains authoritative for the repository-wide exact-head gates.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Encrypted V2 child-task routing now supports explicitly enabled openai-responses providers for opaque ciphertext forwarding. The change adds provider validation, management persistence, GUI controls, capability-aware fallback and combo routing, regression tests, and documentation updates.

Changes

Encrypted V2 passthrough

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider capability and management
src/types/provider.ts, src/config.ts, src/providers/openai-tiers.ts, src/server/management/..., tests/*
Adds allowEncryptedV2AgentTasks, validates and sanitizes it, persists it through provider APIs, exposes it in listings, and checks canonical or explicitly enabled Responses providers.
Encrypted task routing
src/codex/subagent-model-fallback.ts, src/server/responses/core.ts, src/server/adapter-resolve.ts, tests/*
Uses the final wire protocol and inbound wire to select eligible fallback and combo targets. Eligible Responses providers receive encrypted payloads unchanged. Ineligible routes return unreadable_encrypted_agent_task.
Provider settings UI
gui/src/components/..., gui/src/provider-payload.ts, gui/src/provider-workspace/..., gui/src/i18n/*, gui/tests/*encrypted-v2*
Adds a default-off, confirmation-gated setting for openai-responses providers. Endpoint and adapter changes clear the setting, and payload construction persists it only when applicable.
Encrypted task documentation
docs-site/src/content/docs/**
Documents opaque forwarding, provider trust, final wire-adapter checks, fallback and combo routing, and fail-closed errors in the updated locales.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3cbec

This change enables trusted encrypted child-task passthrough, but unresolved current-head issues may still route encrypted tasks through an incompatible wire or unexpectedly revoke the provider opt-in during settings updates. The PR should not merge until these bounded correctness issues are fixed or explicitly accepted; documentation and Turkish localization follow-ups also remain.

설정 키는 OcxProviderConfig.allowEncryptedV2AgentTasks이고 기본값은 unset/false다.

OpenCodex는 ciphertext를 풀지 않는다. src/server/responses/encrypted-payload.tshasUnreadableEncryptedAgentTask()는 그대로다. 꼬리 agent_message에 Fernet encrypted_content가 있고 읽을 수 있는 태스크 텍스트가 없으면 unreadable로 본다. src/server/responses/core.ts는 여전히 HTTP 400, invalid_request_error, unreadable_encrypted_agent_task를 만든다. 최종 라우트는 !canReceiveEncryptedV2AgentTasks(route.provider) && unreadableEncryptedAgentTask일 때만 400이다.

적격 판정은 src/providers/openai-tiers.tscanReceiveEncryptedV2AgentTasks() 한곳으로 모였다. 콤보 픽, 서브에이전트 fallback(src/codex/subagent-model-fallback.tsnativeFallbackOnly), recovery skip, 최종 라우트 reject가 전부 이 헬퍼를 본다.

auth-cors.ts를 건드린 건 CORS origin 정책이 아니다. providerManagementConfigError()에 boolean/adapter 체크를 넣고, safeConfigDTO() allowlist에 플래그를 올린 거다. 그래도 경로가 src/server/auth-cors.ts라서 hygiene이 unsponsored_surface를 붙인다. 호환은 증명되지 않았고, 비-Responses 어댑터는 이 플래그를 켤 수 없다. 55파일 중 런타임 축은 src/types.ts, src/config.ts, src/providers/openai-tiers.ts, src/server/responses/core.ts, src/codex/subagent-model-fallback.ts, src/server/auth-cors.ts, src/server/management/provider-routes.ts, GUI 몇 개다. 나머지는 대부분 locale/docs다.

Re-reviewed exact head 143f1f4f2372b90a00dc1391d3c248559dce2c90.

The rebase is clean: git range-diff shows all 18 PR commits are patch-equivalent to the previously reviewed series, the Turkish eligibility wording is now correct, there are no unresolved review threads, and the docs production build succeeds with all 393 pages.

One mechanical blocker remains before approval: git diff --check origin/dev...HEAD reports a new blank line at EOF in docs-site/src/content/docs/tr/reference/configuration/providers.md:482. Please remove the extra trailing blank line. If the head changes only by that cleanup and exact-head CI is green, I will clear my changes request. This still requires lidge-jun's owner/security approval before merge because it touches the encrypted-task trust boundary and src/server/responses/core.ts.

Approved exact head 1bacc3b80ea49b346cb5fe75943cb4dadd47b463. The only delta from the already re-reviewed 143f1f4f2 head is removal of the two trailing blank lines in the Turkish provider reference; git diff --check is now clean. The 18-commit feature series remains patch-equivalent to the reviewed implementation, the Turkish eligibility wording is synchronized, all review threads are resolved, and exact-head Cross-platform CI plus React Doctor are fully green. This clears my mechanical changes request. Do not merge solely on this approval: encrypted V2 passthrough changes the destination-specific ciphertext trust boundary and still requires lidge-jun exact-head owner/security approval.

Re-reviewed exact head 3cbec9c8de89f372ac9112c92affbea2fd0d1c1b. I am withdrawing my prior approval and requesting changes because one endpoint-trust blocker remains.

The encrypted-task gate runs at src/server/responses/core.ts:2494 before Copilot transport resolution. At core.ts:2635-2640, getOAuthCredentialApiBaseUrl("github-copilot") is supplied to resolveProviderTransport; src/providers/github-copilot-transport.ts:46-50 then lets that stored endpoint override the configured baseUrl even when the provider uses authMode: "key".

I reproduced this through the normal persisted-config and handleResponses path:

  • configured and approved provider destination: https://api.githubcopilot.com
  • stored Copilot credential endpoint: https://api.individual.githubcopilot.com
  • provider: openai-responses, key auth, allowEncryptedV2AgentTasks: true
  • result: HTTP 200; the outbound request went to https://api.individual.githubcopilot.com/v1/responses and contained the original Fernet ciphertext unchanged
  • reproduction: 1 passed, 0 failed, 4 assertions

The replacement origin is still restricted to an allowlisted GitHub Copilot host and the mixed provider/credential state is specialized, so I classify this as a medium/P2 trust-boundary issue rather than arbitrary exfiltration. It nevertheless violates the PR's endpoint-specific approval contract: the destination that receives the opaque task is not the destination that was explicitly approved.

Please bind encrypted-task admission to the final normalized outbound origin. In particular:

  1. resolve the effective transport before the authoritative ciphertext gate, or compare the approved normalized origin with the final transport origin and fail closed on drift;
  2. do not let stored OAuth apiBaseUrl override a key-auth Copilot provider's configured destination;
  3. enforce the same invariant on OAuth refresh/retry paths at core.ts:3175 and core.ts:4585;
  4. add regressions for initial dispatch and refresh/retry proving ciphertext never reaches origin B after approval of origin A.

The previously reported GUI destination reset, management PATCH race, and virtual-alias/fallback/combo blockers are fixed on this head. Exact-head local validation otherwise passed: 316 focused backend tests with 2 platform-only skips, 9 GUI encrypted-V2 tests, 71 independently rerun runtime tests, typecheck, privacy scan, i18n lint, GUI production build, and git diff --check. The current GitHub head still exposes only intake/hygiene/CodeRabbit checks rather than the full cross-platform matrix.

Do not merge this head. After the origin-binding fix, rerun exact-head focused and full CI, then obtain @lidge-jun owner/security approval. Automated/Grok review comments were treated as advisory input and independently checked against the current code.
