Stoic Quote of the Day

Monday, May 04, 2026

Virtue is according to nature; vice is opposed to it and hostile.
— Seneca

Seneca's statement highlights the Stoic belief that living virtuously aligns with our true nature, whereas vice leads us astray, creating internal conflict. Imagine you're river rafting: the natural flow of the river represents living with virtue—choices characterized by wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. When you align with this flow, your journey is smoother, even in turbulent waters, because it's in sync with who you inherently are. On the other hand, vice—embodied by greed, anger, or deceit—resembles trying to paddle upstream against this current. Not only is it exhausting, but it also distances you from your intended path, leading to internal strife and dissatisfaction. In modern life, this can be seen in how honesty and integrity align us with peace and purpose, while deceit or malice brings about turmoil and stress. Embracing virtues is not just moral; it harmonizes with human nature, guiding us toward a fulfilling life marked by inner peace and resilience.
