Credit_Card_Fraud_Classification-

Credit Card Fraud Classification is a machine learning project focused on detecting fraudulent credit card transactions using classification algorithms. The project includes data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, and performance comparison to build an accurate fraud detection system.

💳 Credit Card Fraud Detection using Machine Learning

Problem Statement

Credit card fraud is one of the major challenges in the modern digital banking ecosystem. With millions of transactions happening daily, identifying fraudulent activities manually becomes nearly impossible. Fraudulent transactions not only cause huge financial losses to banks and customers but also reduce trust in online payment systems.

The goal of this project is to build a machine learning-based fraud detection system capable of identifying suspicious credit card transactions accurately and efficiently.

Real-World Problem We Are Solving

Traditional fraud detection systems often struggle because fraudulent transactions represent only a tiny fraction of all transactions, making fraud detection a highly imbalanced classification problem.

This project helps solve real-world challenges by:

  • Detecting fraudulent transactions automatically
  • Reducing financial losses
  • Improving digital payment security
  • Supporting real-time fraud monitoring
  • Minimizing false fraud alerts

🚀 Project Journey

This project was completed step-by-step following a real-world Data Science workflow, starting from raw data analysis to machine learning model development.

📊 Step 1 — Data Understanding & Exploratory Data Analysis

We started by understanding the dataset structure, transaction behavior, feature distributions, and fraud occurrence patterns.

🔹 Tasks Performed

  • Dataset exploration
  • Data type analysis
  • Statistical summaries
  • Missing value checks
  • Fraud vs Non-Fraud analysis
  • Correlation analysis
  • Transaction amount analysis
  • Outlier detection
  • Behavioral pattern analysis

🔍 Key Insights

  • The dataset was highly imbalanced.
  • Fraudulent transactions showed different behavioral patterns compared to legitimate transactions.
  • Certain features had stronger relationships with fraud occurrence.

⚙️ Step 2 — Data Preprocessing

After completing EDA, the dataset was prepared for machine learning modeling.

🔹 Preprocessing Workflow

  • Feature scaling
  • Data normalization
  • Train-test splitting
  • Handling class imbalance
  • Preparing machine-learning-ready data

Step 3 — Machine Learning Classification

Multiple machine learning models were trained and evaluated to identify fraudulent transactions effectively.

Models Used

  • Logistic Regression
  • LDA
  • K-Nearest Neighbors
  • QDA

Model Evaluation Metrics

  • Accuracy
  • Precision
  • Recall
  • F1-Score
  • ROC-AUC Score
  • Confusion Matrix

Final Outcome

The final machine learning pipeline successfully detected fraudulent transactions while minimizing false negatives and improving fraud detection reliability.

This project demonstrates how machine learning can be applied to solve real-world financial security problems through intelligent fraud detection systems.
