The project is a monorepo with two main packages:

extension-frontend: Contains the React application that serves as the UI for the browser extensionserver-backend: The Express server that handles API requests, interacts with AI models, and manages authentication
Follow these instructions to set up and run the project locally.
First, set up the server which powers the extension.
# Navigate to the backend directory
cd server-backend
# Install dependencies
npm installCreate a .env file in the server-backend directory and add the following environment variables:
# Port for the server
PORT=3001
# Your Google Gemini API Key
GEMINI_API_KEY=YOUR_GEMINI_API_KEY
# Firebase configuration (replace with your project's service account key)
GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS=./serviceAccountKey.jsonNext, set up the React frontend for the extension.

cd extension-frontend
# Install dependencies
npm installCreate a .env file in the extension-frontend directory and add your Firebase and backend configuration:

Build the frontend:
cd extension-frontend
npm run buildThis will create a dist folder with the compiled extension files.
- Open Chrome and navigate to
chrome://extensions - Enable Developer mode in the top right corner
- Click on Load unpacked
- Select the
extension-frontend/distdirectory
The AlturaAI Copilot extension should now be active in your browser!
- Click the AlturaAI icon in your browser's toolbar to open the extension
- Sign in using your Google or GitHub account
- Use the "Summarize Page" or "Debug" buttons to analyze the current tab
- Use the research input to start a new research task
