This PR contains a few months of work building on top of #33, including a large-scale reworking of the docs and significantly more tests.
I took a hiatus for about two months, and am working to pick up where I left off. I'm seeing some isolated deadlocks on specific systems, and need to do additional tests to determine the cause.
