This PR is simply to combine all of the v1.2 related changes into one branch that we can comment on. Once each individual feature is ready, they can be merged in turn. This PR may not be kept up to date with the changes in the corresponding sub-PRs.
The schema here will be submitted as PR to the main spec repo.
