Become a sponsor to The Nu Html Checker (vnu)

The Nu Html Checker is critical web infrastructure:

  • the web’s HTML checker: the canonical tool to check content against all specs
  • embedded everywhere: countless CI/CD pipelines, code editors, and build tools

Whenever developers anywhere worldwide add HTML validation to their GitHub Actions workflows, or write something like npm install vnu-jar to install HTML validation tooling, they're using this code.

And that code’s been getting actively maintained and improved for over 15 years — in a web that’s always moving. So it must move too: to keep up with evolving standards, fix bugs/regressions, handle new use cases that crop up, and stay compatible with the ecosystem of tools that depend on it. And that work is done almost entirely by one person — in hours carved out from a full-time job and raising young children.

Your sponsorship helps keep all of this sustainable.

Among the ways sponsorship helps to make a project sustainable: Sponsorship creates accountability. When people put up money, it's a strong incentive to keep this project high-priority — and makes it much harder for other work to end up inadvertently crowding it out.

And lack of funding is well-known to be a giant factor in maintainer burnout — and this project has certainly struggled through maintainer burnout at times. So your sponsorship helps ensure — even in the face of that, and other challenges — this critical piece of web infrastructure can continue to be actively maintained and as bug-free as possible:  solid, reliable, running strong, and continuously improving.

@validator

One of the fundamental goals for this project is to try to sustain a balance between keeping the work going very strongly while still avoiding having the sole maintainer ending up getting spread so thin that it risks maintainer burnout. So your sponsorship helps to provide that balance — to ensure the work remains sustainable. One concrete way you help by sponsoring is: the funding subsidizes some actual “hard costs” for focused development time; specifically, it contributes toward offsetting the monthly costs for occasional use of an outside co-working space by the normally-working-from-home maintainer — space in which to get a few hours each month of concentrated noise-free and distraction-free uninterrupted work done on the project.
