Adding library to android project with android-sdk:3.1.1 optimzely SDK fails

When I follow the instructions in the README i.e

Add implementation 'com.segment.analytics.android.integrations:optimizelyx:1.0.0-beta'

Sync gradle file and without even using the library, just running my project I get:

Error: Interface `com.optimizely.ab.notification.NotificationListener(classpath class)` used as super class of `com.segment.analytics.android.integrations.optimizelyx.OptimizelyXIntegration$OptimizelyNotificationListener`.
