Ilie is exploring contributions to Bitaxe — the first fully open-source Bitcoin ASIC miner, built on ESP32 hardware under the GNU GPL 3.0 license. Bitaxe enables individuals to participate in Bitcoin mining without proprietary hardware, directly strengthening mining decentralisation. The complementary Stratum V2 protocol gives individual miners the ability to select their own transactions — a critical step toward censorship resistance at the mining layer.

Mining decentralisation is among the most critical and underfunded areas of Bitcoin development. When mining is concentrated, transaction censorship becomes possible. Open-source mining hardware and the ability for individual miners to select their own transactions are essential defences against this risk.
