Test Coverage Improvement Plan

Executive Summary

This document outlines a comprehensive plan to improve test coverage for the LabLink project from the current 26% overall coverage to a target of 60% overall and 80%+ on critical paths.

Current Status (v1.0.0 + Phase 1)

  • Total Coverage: ~52-54% overall (baseline 26% + 26-28%)
  • Critical Paths: 85%+ (Phase 1 complete)
  • Tests Passing: 499 tests (137 baseline + 362 new)
  • Untested Modules: ~100 (67% of codebase)
  • Untested Lines: ~21,000

Completed Improvements (November 18, 2025)

Phase 1: Critical Safety & Core - COMPLETED ✅

  • equipment/safety.py - Comprehensive safety system tests (67 tests)
  • config/validator.py - Configuration validation tests (30 tests)
  • equipment/calibration.py - Calibration system tests (45 tests)
  • equipment/calibration_enhanced.py - Enhanced calibration tests (52 tests)
  • waveform/advanced_analysis.py - Advanced signal processing tests (80 tests)
  • firmware/manager.py - Firmware management tests (40 tests)
  • acquisition/synchronization.py - Multi-device sync tests (48 tests)

New Tests Added: 362 tests Total Lines Covered: 4,173 lines Estimated Coverage Increase: +26-28% (from 26% to ~52-54%)

Phase 4: Monitoring & Utilities (Weeks 12-13)

Goal: Achieve 50%+ coverage on utilities

Quality Metrics

  • Test Quality: All tests must follow AAA pattern (Arrange, Act, Assert)
  • Test Isolation: Each test should be independent and idempotent
  • Mock Usage: Use mocks for external dependencies (files, network, equipment)
  • Coverage Depth: Aim for branch coverage, not just line coverage
  • Documentation: Each test file must have comprehensive docstrings

CI/CD Integration

  • Blocking Coverage: Maintain minimum 26% coverage in CI/CD
  • Coverage Reporting: Generate HTML coverage reports for all PRs
  • Incremental Improvement: Require coverage increase for new features
  • Performance: Tests must complete within 5 minutes on CI/CD

  1. Happy Path: Normal operation with valid inputs
  2. Edge Cases: Boundary conditions, empty inputs, maximum values
  3. Error Handling: Invalid inputs, exceptions, error messages
  4. State Management: Object creation, state transitions
  5. Integration Points: Interactions with other modules
  6. Async Operations: For async functions, test concurrency and timeouts

These modules provide significant value but are smaller and faster to test:
