6 years of silence on a basic tablet usability issue — can we get an official word? #2178

Hi,

I am opening this issue mainly to get an official communication, not to repeat a request that has already been well documented.

The context:

On bugs.telegram.org there is card #2899"[Tablet mode] Toggle to use full width chat view", opened on March 3, 2021. To this day it has 61 upvotes, 15 comments (the latest from March 14, 2026), and is tagged both Android and iOS.

The problem is simple and well described: on iPad and Android tablets in landscape, Telegram forces a fixed two-pane layout (chat list + chat content). There is no option to collapse the sidebar and view the conversation in full screen.

The point:

The first report on this topic dates back to issue #368 here on GitHub, opened in September 2020 — almost 6 years ago. Since then, both that issue and the bugs.telegram.org card have received zero official replies. Not a "not planned", not a "under review", not a "we will do it". Total silence for 6 years.

I am not asking for the feature to be implemented. I am only asking: why?

  • Is it a technical limitation of the framework?
  • Is it a deliberate design choice?
  • Is it simply a low priority?
  • Is it a request that never reached the right eyes?

A 30-second comment from a maintainer — even just a "not planned, here is why" — would close 6 years of waiting with some dignity for many users.

Thank you.
