GetTimeSeries default "elevation"

In some cases, my web client doesn't explicitly set the "elevation" Dimension in a GetTimeSeries request. Does the WMS spec say anything about this? The request seems to be received by ncMWS2 but it hangs and the client eventually times out. When the Dimension is explicitly set, all is fine.

Can the default elevation be used by ncWMS2/edal in this case?

The tasseSept/temp variable is a 4-D variable considering time, elevation and 2 spatial dimensions.

For such variables, elevation dimension needs to be explicitly set in GettimeSeries.

In client side code, either you can parse getCapabilities to get the elevation values corresponding to the layer being used or you can use the same GetMetadata request (thanks to @guygriffiths and @jonblower for these a well thought and designed api requests in ncWMS2 and ncWMS1, respectively) to retrieve elevation values:

You should look into following (assuming metadata is the variable in which you fetched the above mentioned GetMetadata request output on client side):
