Issue when trying to configure windows service with PsDesiredStateConfiguration/Service

The Process 'powershell' id 20844 exited with code 1error is returned when trying to configure a Windows Service as described below.

Despite running the dsc.exe -l trace config set --file ./service.config.dsc.yaml with level trace,I can't get the windows powershell error details.

Is winrm still required to use Microsoft.Windows/WindowsPowerShell ressources ?

How can I get the windows powershell error ?

There seems to be a regression somewhere. You don't specify the adapter as that's determined at runtime and automatically used, but alternatively you can be explicit this way:

The example above still works for me, but WindowsPowerShell adapter does require WinRM and admin as it goes through PSDSC v1 which uses the old LCM service. It would be helpful if you posted the trace log (scrubbing any potential sensitive information).

We really don't want to use LCM and winrm anymore. Would it be possible to stop the windows service by using the Microsoft.DSC/Powershell resource instead of the legacy Microsoft.Windows/WindowsPowerShell resource.

The DSCv3 documentation indicates that With the Microsoft.DSC/PowerShell adapter resource, you can use any PSDSC resource implemented as a PowerShell class. The resource handles discovering, validating, and invoking PSDSC resources in PowerShell. The resource is included in the DSC install package for every platform., but I don't understand how to stop a windows service with PSDSC resource implemented as a PowerShell class

@matt6697 the PS7 adapter only supports PS class based resources and I believe will work with the PSDesiredStateConfiguration/Service resource, but any legacy resources implemented as script or WMI-based will not work. I do think we'll eventually have a DSCv3 Service resource.

You can also look at an alternative, which is a command-based DSC resource at: https://github.com/opendsc/opendsc/tree/main/src/OpenDsc.Resource.Windows/Service. This is basically a rewritten version of PSDscResource/Service in .NET as CLI.

@matt6697 - I'm wondering even though you've mentioned they're stored in the cache, but when you do dsc resource list -a Microsoft.DSC/PowerShell, do they return? Those resources in both modules aren't class-based, to my knowledge, and thus cannot run through the PowerShell adapter.
