Roadmap proposal: node replication. #76

Description

@wompslab

tl;dr:

"User has the ability to choose from a list of pre-defined hardware/device recipes. MM then takes the user through any tasks (e.g. reboot holding boot button, check gpio wiring on GPIO17 etc.

Device is flashed and the configured by MM to the requirements in the recipe plus any user-defined variables.

Process can then be repeated as many times as is required

Use Case 1 - lots of light poles

"I have made these cool light poles, which are due to be installed in a venue in a few weeks time, I would like to control them via projectMM, the poles are assembled and have been bench tested - I would prefer to use ArtNet to communicate with them"

The system will prompt user for the devices required informatics (type of light strip, networking optons ) (more on this below) . The system will then :

  • flash the device(s)
  • smoke test
  • configure them to behave as requested and query the user as required (e.g. should the first ArtNet universe be 0 or 1)
  • flash device(s)
  • save config to json or similar for future re-use

Use Case - standalone hub75 displays

"I'm a visual artist and I would like to enhance the guest's experience and use some of some the assorted hub75 panels and mcus I have spare - i have already designed a playlist of fx presets for all devices run. They do not need to remain synchronized."

The system will follow the process above and guide the user through setting up the device parameters and flashing each MCU (they may not all be the same model/spec, so their suitability for the scenario must be checked as part of this process).

The system will then: flash each MCU with an appropriate version of project MM and reconfigure/pre-load the the fx playlist and follow the remaining steps described above.

Misc features and benefits:

  • It would be easiest to limit this replicating Project MM onto other devices, but there are opportunities for collaboration with other artists, makers etc to provide their own recipes which would encourage wider use of project MM.

  • This could be a great resource for educators who could use this functionality to provide a consistent lesson plan/workshop theme with little effort. This could be as simple as an 8x8 matrix which would have a parts cost of ~10EUR/person if parts are purchased in bulk from ali express etc

Reference

  • The rnode esp32 firmware (https://unsigned.io/hardware/RNode.html) - this is a versatile and mature digital radio device with a unique feature: it can be switched to operate as a wifi station which includes the esp-webtools flashing software and various firmware images - this allows for anyone with a single rnode to replicate it's software onto other, compatible hardware in the field without a larger computer, or even internet cess)
