Phase 8: Docker & Deployment

Objective

Prepare OpenBlog for production deployment by implementing containerization with Docker Compose, configuring the application for self-hosting, and creating comprehensive deployment documentation. This phase ensures the platform is fully self-hostable with total user ownership of data and infrastructure.

Scope

Deliverables

  1. Docker Configuration

    • Multi-stage Dockerfile for Next.js
    • Production-ready docker-compose.yaml
    • Postgres database service configuration
    • Volume management for data persistence

  2. Environment Configuration

    • Complete environment variable documentation
    • Example .env files
    • Default values with sensible production defaults
    • Secret management guidance

  3. Health & Monitoring

    • Health check endpoints
    • Container health checks
    • Logging configuration
    • Startup order management

  4. Deployment Documentation

    • Quick-start Docker instructions
    • Configuration reference
    • Troubleshooting guide
    • Backup and restore procedures

UI/UX Governance

This phase has minimal UI work.

Any deployment-related UI (like status pages) should follow:

  • Use DESIGN.md color tokens
  • Maintain the surface hierarchy
  • Apply the "No-Line Rule"
  • Use Manrope and Inter typography

Agent Verification Checklist

Complete all checkpoints as final deliverables:

  • I have created multi-stage Dockerfile for Next.js production build
  • I have created production-ready docker-compose.yaml
  • I have configured Postgres service in docker-compose
  • I have configured volume mounts for data persistence
  • I have documented all environment variables
  • I have created example .env files
  • I have implemented health check endpoints
  • I have configured container health checks
  • I have configured logging
  • I have verified docker-compose builds successfully
  • I have verified the application runs in Docker
  • I have created deployment documentation

Testing & Validation

Manual Verification

  • Deploy on clean machine using documentation
  • Verify all environment variables work

  • Verify container restart behavior
  • Test horizontal scaling if applicable

Required Environment Variables

  • BLOG_NAME
  • BASE_URL
  • PORT (default: 3000)

Dependencies

  • Phase 2: Content Management & API Layer (completed)
  • All previous phases should be complete

Final Milestone

With Phase 8 complete, the OpenBlog platform is ready for production deployment. The complete system includes:

  • Full authentication and authorization
  • Public blog with SEO optimization
  • Admin dashboard and CMS
  • Rich post editor
  • CLI and agent tooling
  • Theme system
  • Docker deployment support
