🔖 Feature description
I would like to be able to use ReadItLater to download things for offline use, and currently that is not implemented for videos.
The ReadItLater notes for videos require internet access, as they are simply embeds.
✔️ Solution
I would like if there was option (similar to #116) to embed the YouTube videos as downloaded MP4s (or another supported format), which could be stored in the same 'assets' folder as website's embed videos.
It would also be helpful (as I've found YouTube unreliable) to be able to configure ReadItLater to download the videos through (or at least support) YouTube proxies such as Invidious. Those interested in security would also benefit from this.
This would be well complemented by transcripts (based on subtitle systems) being included, as macin suggested in Discussions.
❓ Alternatives
It is possible to use other (separate) video downloaders, such as YT-DLP, or Cobalt. Using a different program/service for downloading videos is much less convenient than what I am proposing here.
📝 Additional Context
To me, offline use seems like a big potential use-case of ReadItLater, regardless of how many people are always strapped in (to internet).
There are many situations where internet would not be available, and being able to continue reading, and watching things for research (that I've downloaded ahead of time) even when the internet cuts out, or is slow, would really speed up my workflow.
This is especially true with how unreliable I have found YouTube to be.
